Capturing the First Lei of Laugh Comedy Event in Hawaiʻi

At Kanakanowelo, every event teaches us something new — and recently we had the opportunity to film our very first comedy production during the inaugural Lei of Laugh event on Oʻahu.

The night brought together an incredible lineup of comedians, live entertainment, great food, and nonstop laughter. Headlined by Bulaʻia, the event featured a packed audience, VIP dinner seating, and a fun atmosphere that kept the crowd engaged from beginning to end.

A Night Full of Comedy and Entertainment

The lineup throughout the evening included:

  • Aldrine Guerrero

  • Kumutuna

  • Macky

  • Bulaʻia

The event was hosted by emcee Waipuʻilani, while Kealiʻi Kaiminaʻauao provided live music that helped set the tone throughout the night.

From the opening acts to the headline performance, the crowd was constantly laughing, reacting, and feeding energy back into the room. It created a perfect environment for live event videography and documentary-style crowd coverage.

Filming Our First Comedy Event

Comedy events bring a unique challenge compared to concerts, conferences, or cultural programming. Timing and audience reaction are everything.

For this production, we ran a two-camera setup:

  • One camera locked onto the stage to capture the comedians

  • A second “crowd cam” positioned to capture audience reactions, laughter, and real-time engagement

Capturing the audience is incredibly important during comedy productions because laughter and reactions become part of the storytelling experience. Those candid moments help viewers at home feel immersed in the room.

Audio Challenges and Adaptability

One of the biggest priorities during live comedy filming is high-quality audio. Clear audio can make or break a comedy production.

For this event, we connected directly into the sound engineer’s audio board to capture the comedian microphones and room audio. However, after reviewing the recordings, we discovered static interference on the recorder feed.

Fortunately, we always build redundancy into our productions.

Although we prefer isolated board audio, we were able to pivot and utilize the camera audio to make the final production work. Live productions require adaptability, quick troubleshooting, and staying calm under pressure — especially when there are no second chances to capture live performances.

Testing Our New Blackmagic Studio Converter Setup

This event also gave us the opportunity to put some new production equipment into a real-world environment.

We recently added the Blackmagic Studio Converter to our workflow, and it became a major advantage during the production.

The crowd camera was positioned in the corner of the room where:

  • There was limited space

  • No nearby power outlet

  • Very little room for extra gear

Using the converter system allowed us to:

  • Power the camera remotely

  • Send camera feed over a single connection

  • Record directly onto SSD storage

  • Reduce cable clutter and equipment footprint

This streamlined setup made the production much more efficient and flexible.

Why We Love Recording to SSDs

Another major advantage during this production was our SSD recording workflow.

We recorded directly onto 2TB SSD drives, which gives us:

  • Extended recording times

  • Fewer interruptions during live events

  • Reliable high-capacity storage

  • Reduced stress about memory card limits

One thing we appreciate about the Blackmagic Design ecosystem is the efficient file sizes while still maintaining excellent image quality. That allows us to comfortably film long-form live events without constantly swapping media.

Looking Forward to More Comedy Productions

Overall, the first Lei of Laugh event was an amazing experience filled with energy, culture, entertainment, and nonstop laughter.

As videographers, we enjoy capturing moments that bring people together — whether it’s cultural events, documentaries, live music, educational programs, or comedy shows like this one.

We’re excited to continue filming more live entertainment events throughout Hawaiʻi and refining our production workflows even further.
